Research Activities at Liverpool Hospital BIRU

Research into Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) has been conducted at the Brain Injury Unit at Liverpool Hospital since the unit was established in 1976. Projects have been coordinated internally and in conjunction with local academic facilities. For an up to date list of publications click here.

At present the BIRU is involved in the state-wide study of outcome after brain injury rehabilitation, the Brain Injury Outcome Study which is being coordinated by The Rehabiltation Studies Unit at the University of Sydney. This is a prospective longditudinal study of all brain injury rehabilitation admissions in New South Wales, over the course of one year. Patients are asessed on admission to each rehabilitation episode, be that inpatient, transitional living or community rehabiltation, as well as at discharge. Patients will also be assessed on the first, second and third anniversary of their injury.

Presently we are undertaking a study on ApoE genotype and outcome following TBI. ApoE is a lipoprotein that is involved in the repair of damaged neurons, and the different kinds of ApoE gene differ in their ability to repair neural damage. For further information on this project click here.
