Post-Traumatic Amnesia: The Emerging MindWhen a person emerges from a coma following a brain injury, they are in a state of confusion and are unable to lay down new memories. This state is called Post-Traumatic Amnesia (PTA). During this stage some persons are agitated, restless and/or physically agressive. Relatives often find this very distressing. This video gives a brief description of this stage of recovery, the behaviours that might be present at this time and suggestions for managing the patient whilst s/he is in PTA. It is hoped that the video will be reassuring for relatives and also will be of educational value for "new" staff working with people with brain injuries. This video won a Silver Cindy (The International Cinema in Industry Award) in 1999. |
