A clinical trial is a research/scientific study that is conducted to test new treatments and to find new methods to improve existing treatments. Clinical trials are conducted in most large hospitals throughout the world. Clinical trials help us to find out if a new treatment is safe and effective and also to help us understand and hopefully improve the side effects of the current standard treatment.

Patients decide to participate in clinical trials for a number of different reasons. Some patients participate in the hope that they will have a greater chance of achieving a cure for their disease, a longer time to live and/or a better quality of life. Other patients participate so they can contribute to research that may be of benefit to future patients with the same disease.

If your doctor thinks that you are eligible to participate in a clinical trial he/she will discuss the trial with you and you will then be given a Patient Information Sheet to take home to read and discuss with your family and/or your family doctor. The Patient Information Sheet will contain the following information:

The background and purpose of the clinical trial
What tests and assessments are required
The possible side effects, risks and benefits of the treatment
Your rights if you decide to participate in the trial
An explanation about patient confidentiality
Contact names and phone numbers

If you decide to participate in a clinical trial you will be required to sign a Patient Consent Form prior to entry into the trial. Your progress will be closely monitored by your doctor and the clinical trials staff. You may at any time choose to withdraw from participating in a clinical trial. If you choose to withdraw from participating, your decision to withdraw will be respected and will in no way jeopardise your future treatment or the relationship you have with your doctor or other staff.
