The Depression Clinic

Macarthur Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service located at Campbelltown operates a Depression Clinic. The purpose of this clinic is to provide assessment and treatment services for children and adolescents who are depressed or at risk of developing depression. The clinic accepts referrals of children and adolescents up to the age of 16 years.

Children and adolescents affected by depression commonly:

  • appear sad a lot of the time

  • withdraw from friends and family

  • are irritable

  • cry more than usual

  • have thoughts and feelings that they are worthless or no good

  • stop or lose interest in pleasurable activities

  • have trouble with sleeping patterns

  • have appetite changes

  • have trouble concentrating

  • have thoughts of self harm or suicide

  • experience physical complaints (feeling sick, eg headaches)

Psychological Treatment

Children and adolescents can be taught skills to help them prevent and manage depression. The therapy programs used in the Depression Clinic are research based and are tailored to the individual.

In the first instance, psychological therapy is preferable to medication for the treatment of depression as it gives clients the skills to manage depression in the long term.

  • There is no charge for service provided.

Medication

Medication can be considered for individuals whose level of depression is severe and who don’t respond to psychological therapy.
