Post and Antenatal Mood Disorders Service

About the Service

The aim of the service is the early recognition and intervention of mood disorders in women who are either in the antenatal or postnatal period.

What is a mood disorder?

A mood disorder can manifest itself in different ways and has varying degrees of severity. It can take the form of symptoms of anxiety and or depression, or that pd a Post natal depression in women following the birth of a baby.

Symptoms may include:

  • Overwhelming feelings of anxiety

  • Depressed mood

  • Irritability

  • Poor appetite or overreating

  • Unable to rest even when conditions allow/early morning wakening

  • Tearfulness for no apparent reason

  • Unable to think clearly

  • Thoughts of self harm or harm to the baby

  • Loss of control when usually competent (inability to cope)

  • Feelings of worthlessness or failure as a mother

  • Feelings of anger, exaustion, panic/fear

Services offered by PAAMS:

  • Assessment

  • Consultation

  • Individual Support

  • Medication

  • Group Programs

  • Referral and Advice

  • Education

  • Case Management/Ongoing Monitoring

Criteria:

  • Women aged 16 years or over

  • Women who are pregnant or have a child 0-12 months old

  • Women living in the local Macarthur - Wollondilly area

  • Currently experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression over the last two weeks

  • Women with past history of Post natal Depression or Depression/Anxiety Disorder

Antenatal Referrals:

Women may be referred by:

  • Antenatal Clinics

  • Hospitals

  • Doctors

  • Health Professionals

Women will need to have a letter from their General Practitioner prior assessment specifying that their pregnancy is being monitored.

Postnatal Referrals:

Referrals can be made by:

  • Health Professionals

  • Relevant Agencies

  • Sel-referrals are accepted

  • Concerned families and or friends
