TITLE: Improving Services for Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Assault
PROJECT COORDINATOR: Margo Moore, Women's Health Coordinator

PROJECT SUMMARY: In 1998 the Department of Health released the report on patterns of service provision for adult survivors of sexual assault. One of the recommendations of the report was that agencies consider opportunities for collaboration to improve coordination of services for adult survivors of child sexual assault. It was recommended that cooperation between sexual assault services, women’s health services, drug and alcohol and mental health services, non-government services and private practitioners was a priority. This workshop is a step in improving collaboration around service delivery for adult survivors of child sexual assault.
TARGET GROUP: Service providers who are seeing adult survivors of child sexual assault.
HEALTH ISSUE: Long term adverse effects of child sexual assault
GOALS:
Health Outcome
 Improve understanding of the needs of adult survivors of CSA in terms of quality service delivery  Improve access to services for adult survivors  Improve networks between services providers involved in support for adult survivors  Identify ongoing training needs for service providers in SWS.
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
Hold a half day workshop on 24/3/99 at the Thomas & Rachael moore Education Centre 9am - 1 pm which will include: Background and extent of the problem in SWS. Results of research carried out by Jill Gibbons with Survivors and Service Providers. What makes a good service? Consumers have their say. Lessons on improving access and service delivery from the NESB project. Small group workshops  What are our training needs in SWS?  How can we work more collaboratively?  What additional services do we need and how can we get them?  How can we network more effectively? Feedback and future action.

The areas of the Health Continuum that the project addresses are:
  • Improving health services for women
  • Training health care providers
  • Increasing participation of women in decision making in health
EVALUATION: Process evaluation of the workshop: 65 people registered and 48 attended the workshop from a broad range of services. a follow up working group was identified and additional training needs identified. Additional training programs on Vicarious Methods, booked for 1999-2000.
