TITLE: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) workshop and training

PROJECT SUMMARY: Female Genital Mutilation is a traditional practice affecting women and girls from many countries throughout the world. It has a range of side effects that may affect aspects of women’s well being. Women affected by the practice and living in Australia require sensitive and informed responses from health practitioners in assisting them to minimise adverse health effects and psychological harm.
TARGET GROUP: Service providers in SWSAHS treating women affected by FGM.
HEALTH ISSUE: Adverse physical and psycho-social health effects of FGM.
GOALS:
Health Outcome
 Increased understanding of the cultural, legal, physical and psycho-social issues associated with the practice of FGM  Increased understanding of the needs of women affected by the practice  Identification of policies and procedures that need to be developed and release of staff to enable them to work on this and attend further education.
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
To hold a half day workshop which would include: What is FGM and how does it affect women? Background to the NSW Education Program on FGM and demographic information on the priority communities in SWSAHS. Service responses to assisting women affected by FGM Small group workshops and feedback: What are the issues for services in SWSAHS? How can we address these issues? What assistance do we need in meeting the needs of women affected by the practice? Priorities for future action in SWSAHS. Follow up working parties to develop local protocols. Training on clinical and psycho-social effects of FGM.

FUNDING: NSW Education Program on FGM
The areas of the Health Continuum that the project addresses are:
  • Prevention
  • Reorienting health services
  • Improving health services for women
EVALUATION: 105 people attended the half day workshop. Evaluations showed a high level of achievement of learning outcomes from the workshop. People interested in participating in working parties identified. People interested in further training identified.
