TITLE: Biyani - Young Aboriginal Women's Camp
PROJECT COORDINATOR: Robyn Field, Karen Mc Nulty, Di Lane.
PROJECT PARTNERSHIPS: Aboriginal health, Urimbirra Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders Corporation, Tharawal Aboriginal Corporation, Gillawarna Aboriginal Corporation, Tharawal Land Council, Gandangara Land Council,Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Commission.
PROJECT SUMMARY: The first Biyani camp in 1998 was targeted towards adult Aboriginal women. Women at the camp identified the need for a camp where young Aboriginal women could explore their relationships with their mothers and how that fits with kinship law and spiritual bonding. Young Aboriginal women are faced with many difficulties within a family and the wider social structures such as denial of Aboriginal culture, low self esteem, racism, violence against women, family separations, unemployment. These have great impact on emotional and physical well-being. The aims of the camp are to provide a holistic culturally appropriate framework within which these difficulties and solutions can be explored.
TARGET GROUP: Younger Aborigianl women 12 - 18 who live in South Western Sydney and their mother / carer.
HEALTH ISSUE: Cultural, emotional and physical health of young women and their mothers/ carers.
GOALS:
Health Outcome
Strengthen and enhance the personal, family and community resources of young Aboriginal women and their mother / carers. Affirm Aboriginal cultural and spiritual values. Strengthen Aboriginal community networks across South Western Sydney . Improve Aboriginal women’s mental and emotional wellbeing. Build on Aboriginal women’s skills and knowledge about preventative Health practices. Broaden the concept of health provision to include traditional and alternative health practices. Develop young Aboriginal women’s capacity to act a community resource people around women’s health issues.
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
To provide a week-end residential camp for young Aboriginal women who live in South Western Sydney and their mothers / carers which will enhance the health and long life of young Aboriginal women. The camp will focus on issues of birth and bonding between young women and their mothers / carers within an Aboriginal Cultural and Spiritual environment.The camp will include a range of activities including: Ceremonial smoking, Traditional Dance, Traditional medicine and healing, Bonding between women and kinship law, Arts program, Bush tucker and nutrition information, Clinical services such as Naturopathy, Well Women’s clinics, Hearing and diabetes testing, Health information provided by a Health Expo. Physical activities such as Cultural dancing, bush walks, self defence workshops, Workshops on physical and mental well being such as relaxation and massage Sexual health, and Legal issues workshops.
