TITLE: The Parent and Infant Enrichment Program: Implementation and evaluation of an early intervention program for parents of infants 0 to 6 months of age.

PROJECT SUMMARY: PIE consists of four (2 hour) weekly sessions and aims to provide an adequate and appropriate service for parents vulnerable to ongoing problems with parenting. Parents are provided with detailed verbal and written information on sleep and settling, sensory, motor, cognitive development, infant communication, and activities to enhance the quality and variety of sensory, perceptual-motor and cognitive experiences. Opportunities are provided to practice the skills discussed in session. the 'Good' and 'Not so Good' aspects of parenthood and the recognition and management of stress and postnatal depression are discussed. A strong emphasis is on the development of social support networkss. The emphasis is on increasing parents sensitivity to their child's needs and their awareness of the importance of their role in children's early development.
TARGET GROUP: Parents of infants 0 to 6 months of age who are experiencing difficulties and who may be vulnerable to ongoing problems with parenting.
HEALTH ISSUE: Provision of adequate and appropriate service to mothers of infants 0 to 6 months of age who are experiencing difficulties and who may be vulnerable to ongoing problems with parenting.
GOALS:

Enhance parental sensitivity, positive parent-child interaction and facilitate the development of secure attachment.
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
Enhance *Knowledge of issues related to sleep and settling and demonstrate settling techniques *Awareness of normal infant physical, social, cognitive and emotional development up to 12 months of age and create realistic expectations about infant development *Provide practical suggestions to stimulate development *Share the wonderment of development as it is happening *Awareness of local health resources/services related to parenting *Foster the belief that parents can influence infant development and enhance parental competence and confidence *Reduce parental distress and expand social support network.

EVALUATION: The primary aim is to assess the appropriateness and adequacy of services - what type of program is attended by whom Design * Mothers attending PIE group are compared with mothers attending one off Sleep and Settling sessions across BLGA. * No random allocation and groups were not matched * Repeated measures: Pre Post (5 wks.) 3mths. Outcome Measures: *Parenting Stress Index (SV) - parental distress and parent-infant interaction *Depression Anxiety & Stress Scale Abbreviated Dyadic Adjustment Scale - marital satisfaction *Adequate social support from friends/family and community groups *Pre-post session topic knowledge test - multiple choice format *Quality of presentations *Parent's belief that they can influence their infant's development *Quality of parent-child interaction
