TITLE: Menopause Program for the Women of Wollondilly
PROJECT COORDINATOR: Wendy Thomson and Grace Malan
PROJECT PARTNERSHIPS: Wendy Thomson, Women's Health Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist; Grace Malan, Health Educator, and Noi Snith, Naturopath Benevolent Society; Teresa Harm Health Promotion Officer, and Dr. Solveig Hamilton, local GP.
PROJECT SUMMARY: Provide an opportunity for women from isolated communities to explore menopause
TARGET GROUP: Women experiencing menopause, perimenopause and postmenopause in the Wollondilly environs
HEALTH ISSUE: Menopause
GOALS:
Health Outcome
~Provide an opportunity for women to explore menopause as a natural transition ~Build on women's knowledge of the physical, social and emotional aspects of menopause ~Provide an opportunity for women to learn and share knowledge about preventative health care strategies and ways of managing menopausal systoms ~promote a positive view of aging ~Stregthen women's social networks and knowledge of relevant services ~Provide an opportunities for women to enhance their self-confidence and self esteem
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
A four week interactive program of(2 and 1/2 hour) weekly sessions~to learn about the sexual and reproductive system,the role of hormones, identify the symptoms of Menopause and how to stay well during menopause. ~To learn about Aging and Osteoporosis. ~The role of hormone therapy, exercise and natural therapies. ~To take part in an exercise session. ~To learn stress management and to practise relaxation techniques. ~To explore local community networks and resources.

FUNDING: Utilising the available resources of Macarhtur Health Service and Benevolent Society
The areas of the Health Continuum that the project addresses are:
  • Creating supportive environments for health
  • Improving health services for women
  • Increasing participation of women in decision making in health
EVALUATION: ~Sessional process evaluation to determine the quality of the program and wether it reached the designated target group. ~A group evaluation in the last session to be conducted by an evaluator from the Benevolent Society's Mid to Older Women's Team
