TITLE: Recruitment of older women peer educators for the SWSAHS Cervical Screening program.

PROJECT PARTNERSHIPS: Older Women's Wellness Centre
PROJECT SUMMARY: To recruit and train older women to act as peer educators who can conduct cervical screening information/education sessions independently for their peers and to improve their participation rates in cervical screening across SWSAHS.
TARGET GROUP: Older women aged 50 yrs and over.
HEALTH ISSUE: Cervical Cancer
GOALS:
Health Outcome
To increase the cervical screening participation rates of older women in South Western Sydney. To improve the social status of older women through providing sessional employment and promoting peer role models.
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
1. Recruit peer educators among the target group of older women. 2. Provide appropriate traning and resources to the peer educators to enable them to conduct cervical screening information sessions independently on regular basis. 3. Link educators to appropriate groups/organisations requesting education sessions. 4. Provide ongoing support to educators as required.

FUNDING: SWSAHS Cervical Screening Program
The areas of the Health Continuum that the project addresses are:
  • Prevention
  • Early detection
  • Creating supportive environments for health
  • Developing health literacy
  • Training health care providers
EVALUATION: Three women were trained as educators and are now available to run education sessions across South Western Sydney.
RESOURCES: Kit for education sessions including overheads, video, brouchures etc.
