TITLE: Multicultural Women Health Expo
PROJECT COORDINATOR: Balwinder Sidhu Area Project Officer,SWSAHS Cervical Screening Program
PROJECT PARTNERSHIPS: Fairfield Multicultural Family Planning, Immigrant Women Health Services, Cabramatta Community Health Centre, Fairfield Liverpool Youth Health Team, Drug Intervention Service Cabramatta, Fairfield Community Resource Centre.
PROJECT SUMMARY: The Multicultural Women's Health Expo was organised to provide "One Stop" information to NESB women on a range of women's health issues particularly focusing on early intervention services like cervical screening and breast screening.The expo was used as an approach to increase the access of NESB communities to these services and in addition as an opportunity to broaden the recruitment strategies beyond the education sessions or consultation methods. It was held at Fairfield Neeta City shopping centre. Brochures and related information in a number of community languages was made available and bookings were taken during the expo for both pap tests and mammograms via Multicultural Family Planning and Breast Screen Western respectively.
TARGET GROUP: NESB women aged 18-70 years.
HEALTH ISSUE: Women's health issues with particular focus on cervical and breast screening.
GOALS:
Health Outcome
1. To increase cervical and breast screening participation rates among NESB women providing access to information and 'on the spot' bookings in a community setting. 2. Networking - to strengthen and to build new relationships with other Government and non-Government organisations fostering intersectoral partnerships.
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
1. Liasion with service providers working for women's health and immigrant health. 2. Liasion with the shopping centre management for date, time & venue. 3. Publicity for increased participation through local newspapers, workers and community stake holders. 4. Display incorporating: Information stalls by women's health services. Entertainment for women and children. Health checks. Demonstrations of a range of natural therapies. 4. Bookings for the follow up clinics.

The areas of the Health Continuum that the project addresses are:

  • Creating supportive environments for health
  • Developing health literacy
  • Improving health services for women
  • Increasing participation of women in decision making in health
EVALUATION: The project was evaluated through use of a structured questionnaire completed by service providers participating in the expo which indicated that over 100 women accessed the display, nine of them booked for pap tests and two for the mammogram. It was further found from the participants survey that they were satisfied with the number of clients who visited their stalls and showed a keen interest to participate in similar coordinated approaches in future.
