TITLE: Young Women and Smoking: Women in Control of smoking (WICOS) and Health Promotion (Working Name)

PROJECT SUMMARY: This project will identify the health and social issues affecting young women as they perceive them. Cigarette smoking and it¡¦s impact on young women¡¦s health will be explored through workshops and consultations. An art competition will also be conducted to encourage young women to promote their views on cigarette smoking and introduce them to health promotion campaigns. A community artist will facilitate the art workshop sessions, and collate the artwork images to be presented in the form of an art exhibition. Cigarette smoking and its increasing impact on young women¡¦s health, will be used as a means to introduce young women to health promotion campaigns & associated events. This process will be used to assist in empowering young women to voice their needs and concerns, increase their knowledge and access to youth and health services, and hence expand their social and community support network.

Overall Goal: To further educate young women on smoking and its related health issues, in addition to increasing young women's awareness and access to youth and health services. 1. To increase young women¡¦s knowledge of cigarette smoking related health issues. 2. To assist young women in gaining a thorough understanding of health promotion campaigns and events and increase their participation in these. 3. To increase the awareness and access of young women to programs & services being offered by youth and health services. 4. To enable young women to recognise women¡¦s issues within a holistic framework. (ie assist them in identifying the physiological, emotional, social, psychological, cultural etc aspects of issues affecting them). 5. To facilitate young women¡¦s process to empowerment by providing a medium or forum from which they can voice their concerns. 6. To identify potential service responses from youth and health services in Liverpool Local Government Area
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
ƒü Conduct workshops that explore young women¡¦s perceptions and knowledge on the effects of cigarette smoking. ƒü Use these workshops as an opportunity to challenge myths and provide information to enable informed decision-making. ƒü Provide schools/teachers with information they can relay to students. ƒü Conduct workshops that explore the meaning of such events and the potential for young women¡¦s involvement. ƒü Conduct an art competition that encourages young women to express their ideas and beliefs in relation to cigarette smoking. ƒü Conduct consultations ¡V what young women would like to have available? ƒü Develop/promote appropriate programs/services in accordance to consultation. ƒü Introduce & initially accompany young women to programs/service to encourage attendance by young women. ƒü Explore and provide information to young women via consultations and workshops. ƒü Conduct pre and post surveys to observe the young women¡¦s understanding of women¡¦s issues. ƒü Opportunity for young women to express their opinions/views through public exhibition/launch and explanation of their artwork. ƒü Opportunity for young women to get involved in services¡¦ management committees, working parties, etc. ƒü Write and distribute a report documenting issues raised during the forum and recommendations for action ƒü Conduct a six month follow-up with youth and health services

EVALUATION: Process evaluation: ƒü Post evaluation (structured discussion and self administered questionnaire) with project participants to assess their satisfaction with the project and any suggestions for improvement. ƒü Record of verbal feedback from participants, school and others involved including persons viewing art exhibition. ƒü Record of number of participants attending workshops and consultations. ƒü Record of number of competition entries. ƒü Documentation of exhibition (and workshops) ¡V photos and video recording (with permission from participants). ƒü Records of media coverage of project and art exhibition. ƒü Records of participant follow-ups and referrals ƒü Record of consultations and workshops presented in a report. Impact evaluation: ƒü Analysis of pre and post survey to assess the young women¡¦s understanding of women¡¦s issues. ƒü Measure increases in young women¡¦s participation in other health and youth programs and services. ƒü Post evaluation (structured discussion) with school teachers involved to assess observed changes in health knowledge, attitudes or behaviour (especially in relation to cigarette smoking) of young women and referrals made. Performance indicators: ƒü Number of young women reducing or not taking up cigarette smoking. ƒü Increased involvement/participation by young women in other services and programs. ƒü Youth and health services providing programs and service that are relevant and appropriate to young women.
