TITLE: Step Ahead Self-Help Support Group
PROJECT COORDINATOR: Lynne Dominish of Tahmoor Community Resource Service
PROJECT PARTNERSHIPS: SWSAHS Women's Health service Consumer advocates
PROJECT SUMMARY: To establish self-help support groups for women with Mental Health issues living in the semi-rural communities of Southern Wollondilly. Additionally to raise the profile of and to increase access to the Tahmoor Resource Service's support network
TARGET GROUP: Women living in Southern Wollondilly who experience anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, OCD and stress.
HEALTH ISSUE: Mental Health
GOALS:
Health Outcome
To empower women living with mental health issues in isolated areas by *encouraging social interactive support *reducing their isolation *developing personal skills and health literacy
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
Establish a weekly Women¡¦s Mental Health support group "Step Ahead Self-Help Support Group" that ensures a committed weekly attendance from participants and mutual personal sharing and support.

The areas of the Health Continuum that the project addresses are:
  • Creating supportive environments for health
  • Developing health literacy
  • Improving health services for women
  • Increasing participation of women in decision making in health
  • Research and data collection
EVALUATION: Process evaluation: group participants provide Qualitative evaluation of group sessions „X Media campaign informed the public of the program, distribution of brochures, deputations to G.P.¡¦s. „X referals from local health professionals „X Training provided for assistant group facilitators (consumer advocates)and recruited from group members Impact evaluation: quarterly written evaluation on group outcomes „X Collaboration with Community Health and NGO services increased and enhanced „X Access by participants to local support networks increased „X Networks for mutual support established for consumers and their families eg family picnic „X Increased opportunities for consumers to determine directions for their group/life
