TITLE: Deaf & Hearing Impaired Women's Health

PROJECT PARTNERSHIPS: The Benevolent Society Centre for Women's Health The Deaf Society of NSW "WITCHES" Deaf/hearing impaired women's group
PROJECT SUMMARY: Deaf and hearing impaired women constitute a significant group within "disabilities". our work with the Deaf & Hearing Impaired Women's Group (WITCHES) over the last 3 years has afforded us ongoing opportunity of identifying with women the layers of barriers they experience regarding their health. These include access to information (in Plain-english), access to communication systems(i.e.TTY) and resources (interpreters), and access to opportunities to voice their experiences and needs. Many of these barriers can be simply and effectively overcome through improved service delivery and increased knowledge of service providers
TARGET GROUP: Deaf & hearing impaired women

GOALS:
Health Outcome
* Identify health priorities for Deaf & hearing impaired women including significant health service providers * Identify experiences of Deaf & hearing impaired women regarding specific health issues, including access issues and relevant social determinants of health * Develop participant's knowledge of specific health issues including services, resources and referral processes * Increase key service provider's knowledge of Deaf & hearing impaired women's access to services * Promote general knowledge of Deaf & hearing impaired women's needs and experiences
STRATEGIES:
Process Activities
* Pre-forum consultation with Deaf & hearing impaired women to determine health issues * Four information presentation workshops *Record and document consultations * One Forum for service providers on best practice model of strategies and resources to increase access for Deaf & hearing impaired women * Document women's experiences and strategies to increase access through Plain-english resource
