Summary of Contents:

INTRODUCTION

For many non - English speaking background women this may be their first opportunity to discuss what health and staying healthy means for them. The program provides a valuable starting point for further health education by giving women access to information in their own language and a chance to share experiences in a setting where their cultural views are respected and affirmed.

The New Healthy Women program is intended to be run by women from non-English speaking communities who are interested in increasing their own, and other women’s knowledge and understanding of women’s health issues and the health system.

CONTENTS

The community education program, New Healthy Women, consists of eight, two-hour sessions, usually run once a week in the first language of women in the group. The first seven sessions are set out in detail in the New Healthy Women Manual and cover:

  • Introduction to health
  • Food and healthy eating
  • Learning about our bodies
  • Changes in our lives
  • Taking care of our bodies
  • Dealing with stress
  • Using health services

The final session is devoted to a topic of particular interest to women in the groups. A possible Session 8 on breast care is included in the New Healthy Women manual.
