Tailored to your needs…

With over ten years experience in outreach education for hospitals, government departments, community health centres, schools, language colleges and community based organisations, we recognise that agencies work with torture and trauma survivors in a range of contexts. Our training programmes are tailored to your unique organisational needs using specially developed case studies and material which focuses on the specific needs of your staff and client group.

STARTTS provides training that is responsive to the needs of participants and is learner-centred. To ensure our training is most effective, in conjunction with the workplace, we will survey staff as to their needs, experiences and skills and design a training session that draws on current experience and extends skills.

Flexibility and choice

Areas covered may include:

Introduction to working with refugees

  • information about STARTTS services
  • the phases of refugee experience
  • difference between migrants and refugees
  • demographics
  • strategies in working with torture and trauma survivors

Introduction to clinical issues

  • physical and psychological impact or torture and trauma on individuals, families and communities
  • the nature of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • assessment and treatment issues
  • self care – vicarious trauma and burnout

Educational issues

  • impact of torture and trauma on learning for children
  • impact of torture and trauma on learning for adults
  • assessment and interview issues
  • strategies that work in the classroom

If staff have a working knowledge and understanding of refugee issues they can benefit from more comprehensive training which we are able to provide.

Our community education programmes can also be designed with particular client groups or work settings in mind.

These can include:

  • child and adolescent groups;
  • women;
  • family;
  • unemployed;
  • working in a medical setting.

Fees may apply for some courses.
